The Newbury Association for the Apprehension & Prosecution of Thieves and Felons by Richard Godfrey. £3.50 + p&p
The first in a new series of History Notes publications covers the history of this association. Before the days of police forces people were reliant on parish constables to aprehend villains and protect them from crime. Some felt that this system was not up to the job and banded together is associations such as this one to help combat crime. Sourced largely from the Association's minute book, with additional material from court records this 44pp booklet includes details of all subscribers to the Association and the various crimes and criminals they helped to apprehend and prosecute.
Richard Godfrey (a former Chief Inspector in the Thames Valley Police) is also the author of a book on the Newbury Borough Police.
