A chance to hear one of the country's leading experts on the road network that is still in use in many areas, almost 2,000 years after it was created.

During a long career at the Transport Research Laboratory, Crowthorne, Hugh Davies learnt a lot about road building, contributing to state-of-the-art improvements in our roads. From the forefront of road engineering he developed an abiding interest in the first engineered roads in the country. His expertise has been widely recognised.

Hugh is the author of Roman Roads in Britain, No 90 in the excellent Shire Books series and Roads in Roman Britain, a more comprehensive work for The History Press.
