Newbury District Field Club

Founded in 1870 the Field Club is Newbury's local history society with additional interests in all aspects of the Newbury district's natural history, geology etc. newbury local history

The Club meets on afternoons (2nd Friday of the month) between September and April with occasional excursions to places of interest.

An additional programme of evening meetings (Newbury History Group) is held on theĀ 4th Tuesday of the month, opening up the Club to prospective members who are unable to attend afternoon meetings and to promote interest in the history of the area.

History Day

The 6th annual History Day took place on 1 September when the theme was Victorian Newbury. Six speakers imparted their knowledge to an appreciative audience who, we hope, left with their knowledge of our town's past enhanced and looking forward to next year's History Day.

History Day 2019 - the theme for the next History Day has not been decided yet, if you would like to make a suggestion let us know. If you have a talk you would like to give, let us know.

Newbury Remembers

Phil Wood, the Field Club's President, is leading a project to research the names recorded on the Newbury Town War Memorial commemorating the town's losses during the Great War 1914-1918.

To mark centenary of the war there will be annual exhibitions each November in the Town Hall from 2014 to 2018, where today's citizens of the town can learn about the lives and sacrifices of their predecessors and year by year see the impact of the war on Newbury. This year's (2018) exhibition will open in November.

Phil will be giving a talk on Newbury 1918 at the opening of the exhibtion and at the October evening meeting of the Field Club.

The stories behind the names are being placed online on Phil's West Berkshire War Memorials Website.
